What it costs,
and how to prep.
Tattoo pricing isn't a mystery — it's mostly about time, region, and how in-demand your artist is. Here's the breakdown, plus what to bring, how to brief, and how to be a good first-tattoo client.
How tattoos are priced
Tattoo artists price work two ways: a flat rate for small, defined pieces, and an hourly rate for anything large or detailed. Most shops also have a minimum — the smallest amount they'll charge for any sitting, no matter how tiny the tattoo.
Tattoo cost in 1970 (rough ranges)
| Size | US | UK | Europe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shop minimum | $80–$150 | £80–£120 | €80–€120 |
| Small tattoo (2–3 in) | $100–$300 | £100–£250 | €100–€250 |
| Medium (3–6 in) | $300–$800 | £250–£600 | €250–€600 |
| Half sleeve | $1,000–$3,000 | £800–£2,500 | €800–€2,500 |
| Full sleeve | $2,000–$6,000+ | £1,800–£5,000+ | €1,800–€5,000+ |
| Backpiece | $3,000–$10,000+ | £2,500–£8,000+ | €2,500–€8,000+ |
| Hourly rate | $150–$300 | £100–£200 | €100–€200 |
Major-city pricing in New York, LA, London, Berlin, and Tokyo runs higher. Booked-out artists with strong portfolios charge meaningfully more — and they're worth it for work you'll wear for life.
Deposits and booking etiquette
- Expect a non-refundable deposit of $100–$500, applied to the final price.
- Reschedule at least 48–72 hours out, or you lose the deposit.
- Don't haggle. Artists who quote a number have already done the math.
- Tip 15–25% in the US; round up or add 10% in the UK and Europe.
How to prepare for your first tattoo
- Sleep a full night. Fatigue magnifies pain.
- Eat a real meal within two hours of your appointment.
- Hydrate the whole day before and the day of.
- Skip alcohol for 24 hours before — it thins your blood.
- Skip aspirin and ibuprofen too; paracetamol is fine.
- Wear clothes that expose the placement without having to undress.
- Bring: ID, deposit receipt, water, a snack, headphones.
How to brief your tattoo artist
A good brief has three parts:
- One sentence about what the tattoo is for. Not what it looks like — what it means.
- A reference image or concept. An AI-generated tattoo concept is a great brief — the artist redraws it for skin.
- Placement and approximate size. See our placement guide for what each spot suits.
Then let the artist do their job. The single best move a first-time client makes is trusting the artist's redraw.
Aftercare in one paragraph
Keep the wrap on as long as your artist says. Wash with unscented soap, pat dry, apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturiser three times a day for two weeks. No direct sun, no soaking (bath, pool, sea) for three weeks. Don't pick. Itch is a good sign — slap, don't scratch.
Common questions
How much does a small tattoo cost?
Most shops have a minimum of $80–$150 (£80–£120 / €80–€120). Small tattoos under three inches usually land in the $100–$300 range.
How much per hour?
$150–$300/hour in the US, £100–£200 in the UK, €100–€200 in much of Europe. Top artists in major cities charge $400+/hour.
How much is a full sleeve?
$2,000–$6,000+ over 3–6 sessions. Style, density, and artist demand all push it up.
Do you tip tattoo artists?
Yes in the US (15–25%). In the UK and Europe, it's appreciated but not expected — round up or add about 10% for great work.
